CHARTER PLANE FOR TROOPS

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, December 5. Nearly 100 replacement Australian troops due to fly to Malaysia today by Qantas will go instead on a British charter plane.

Because of the strike by its pilots, Qantas has arranged for British Eagle, a charter company, to transport the troops, a Qantas spokesman said last night The troops are expected to fly from Sydney airport today, probably aboard a Britannia. An official spokesman for the Australian Federation of Air Pilots said last night that 10 days ago the federation had offered to man any military charters or mercy flights free of charge, subject to normal accommodation and meals arrangements.

The Qantas spokesman said: “It was quite out of the question to put aircraft worth many millions of dollars in the hands of striking pilots who had abdicated their responsibilities. "Therefore, we arranged the charter with British Eagle.” Meanwhile, the strike enters its eleventh day today with no immediate prospect of settlement. Qantas is expected to stand down more staff in Melbourne today.
