Warning To Young Australians
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) . SYDNEY, December 5. Warnings to young Australians planning working holidays in England were issued today by the New South Wales Agent-General, Mr Abram Landa.
He had just arrived in Sydney from London for a brief holiday. “All Agents-General have held a meeting on Britain’s attitude to young Australians," he said. “We are very perturbed because we agree they are not getting a “fair go-’ "The position is very serious, and we are protesting against the treatment young Australians are getting.” Mr Landa said he wished to warn immediately any young Australians who had planned working holidays in England that they might be allowed to stay no longer than three months.
“The first thing they should make sure of is to see the British High Commissioner’s office and get a permit,” he said.
“If they cannot they must resign themselves to being turned out of Britain. “We know the position is delicate, but we believe Australians are in a different position from some other Commonwealth citizens." Mr Landa said that, primarily, the two great differences were: Australians had grown up accepting Britain as their homeland. Their inherited feelings were to see it to learn about it first hand, not to work in Britain for years and perhaps the rest of their lives. He added he would continue with other states Agents-General to make the strongest protests against British, discrimination against young Australian men and women.
