Many Children In U.K. ‘Deprived’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, December 5. A survey showed that 500,000 children throughout Britain were “deprived”, the Minister of Social Security, Miss Margaret Herbison, said in Kilmarnock, Scotland, yesterday
She said the survey revealed that there were 160,000 families in Britain in which the bread-winner was earning less than the National Assistance Board scales allowed for his family. “This means that there are 500.000 children in this group who are being deprived at the present time,” Miss Herbison said.
“My first priority is to do something for those families. The Government has given a great deal of thought to this.”
Miss Herbison said that changes in welfare provisions had made a considerable improvement in the lives of old people. Up to the end of last week
half a million had applied for supplementary pensions. Of these 430,000 had never applied for them before.
