Students’ Mental Health

Sir, —I have a nerve to criticise the letter from Varian J. Wilson wherein he states: “For the person who is legally sane there are no tests or procedures which can be relied upon to determine psychiatric morbidity.” Will he tell us on what grounds he doubts the powers of such diagnosis in our family doctors, nerve specialists, the Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer, the special wards at Princess Margaret and Calvary, and in Christchurch Public’s specialist de-1 partment? The letter could mislead patients into needlessly and unhappily seeking treatment as voluntary board-

ers at a mental hospital. I also venture a criticism that “nihil utile” pertains to a lay remark that “many qualified doctors, while not actually psychotic, remain perpetually in the state where they are ignorant of sources of help and do not know what to do.” Even the Creator appears uncertain of the perpetual state of any man.— Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. December 3, 1966.
