United Tour In Doubt

CV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. With the proposed two-match soccer tour of New Zealand by English first-division leader, Manchester United, only six months away, serious doubts have been raised whether the club will play in this country. Financial difficulties are holding up the New Zealand Football Association completing arrangements for United’s tour.

The chairman of the N.Z.F.A., Mr R. S. Smith, said on Saturday that they would accept the tour only if they were able to arrange better terms than those being offered.

He said tf the N.Z.F.A. could not make these arrangements it would probably offer associations the right to buy games. In a final effort to make the Manchester tour possible the deputy-chairman of the national body (Mr J. Cowie) will fly to Australia within the next fortnight to discuss the terms of the tour. While there he will also have talks with the president of F.I.F.A. (Sir Stanley Rous).
