Canterbury Superior In Howe Shield

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Canterbury was far superior to its opponents in the under-19 girls’ Howe Shield tennis series at Greymouth at the week-end.

Canterbury had won two singles matches in the final against Nelson, and was leading in another, when heavy rain spelt the end to further play at 5 p.m. yesterday, and Nelson formally defaulted the remaining matches. Rain marred play throughout the week-end. On Saturday there was no play until 4 p.m. Yesterday, although wet to their skin, the girls played on, leaving the courts only in the heaviest showers. Two Canterbury players, Miss R. Dillon and Miss R. Legge, impressed Greymouth tennis officials. Both recently received coaching from Mrs T. Long, of Australia, and in spite of the rain showed

themselves to be players of promise. Both are in the final trials for the Wilson Cup team to go to Adelaide. The trials will played in Wellington on December 13, 14 and 15. West Coast played well throughout, but lacked the experience and polish of its opponents. Results: NELSON V. MARLBOROUGH Women’s Singles P. Thorpe lost to C. Wadsworth, 2-6, 0-6: G. Elford lost to M.
