Swimming Standard High In Teleprinter Trials

Prospects of further success by Canterbury in the national Speedo Teleprinter contest loomed large at the St. Albans pool on Saturday when a high standard was maintained in the regional trials.

The meeting produced several prospective winners for the national finals of this age group competition, to be held simultaneously in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland on December 17.

Chief among the Canterbury candidates will be Catherine Whiting (Wharenui), the New Zealand winner at under-12 girls’ freestyle and backstroke last season. In the under-14 division on Saturday she was clearly a class ahead of her rivals In the excellent times of Imin 3.ssec for 100 yd freestyle and Imin 13.6 sec for 100 yd backstroke. Her freestyle time was only half a second outside the old New Zealand under-14 girls’ mark established 11 years ago by Jennifer Hunter, who was later a national Senior champion and Empire Games representative. Mark and Brent Lewis (Spreydon) and Michael Lee (Wharenui), all winners in last year’s national teleprinter finals, again displayed considerable ability in a variety of strokes. Brent Lewis was the fastest qualifier in freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke in the under-U section, then moved up to the under-12 class and gained a similar distinction in backstroke. Times considerably faster than those of boys of their own ages were returned by Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood) in the under-13 girls’ breaststroke and butterfly events and Helen Sexton (Wharenui) in the under-12 girls’ backstroke freestyle and butterfly. In spite of a leisurely finish, Tui Shipston (Elmwood) was only I.Bsec outside the New Zealand girls’ short course record for 100 yd freestyle with a time of Imin l.lsec. Fill-in events for swimmers in her section tunder--16) have been included in the teleprinter programme to assist competitors seeking to qualify for the New Zealand junior team to compete in Australia next month.

The biggest surprise of the carnival was the defeat of the Wharenui trio, N. Williams, A. B. Kindred and D. M. Kindle, by M. Johnston (Jellie Park) in the open 100 yd freestyle. Because of examinations, Johnston has devoted little time to training this summer, but his performance should encourage him to prepare solidly for the Canterbury championships.
