SMALL SEED EXPORTS
Fair Year For
Farmers Small seed exports to Europe and South America are tapering off. Exports to South America will close for the season with the consignment of various parcels of seed in the Van Spillenberg, now calling at North Island ports.
Fair orders were again received this year from Chile, the Argentine and Uruguay. Chile took fair quantities of Hl ryegrass, but the Argentine showed more interest in perennial ryegrass. South American countries are also experimenting with Anki ryegrass. Both Chile and Uruguay have taken good quantities of cow grass. With one or two exceptions. this year will not be remembered by farmers as a good one for small seeds. Perennial ryegrass was quoted to the grower at 15s a bushel for mother seed, and pedigree Ariki was quoted at only Is stronger. Cocksfoot, at up to 6s a lb for pedigree seed, and 5s 6d for mother seed, was the exception in a relatively low range of prices.
The year has not been buoyant for merchants, either. The over-all impression gained from trading has been that business overseas has been steady, provided quotations were kept steady, and below usual levels.
