Costs Of Maintaining Akaroa Sports Grounds

The Akaroa County Town Committee has decided to meet representatives of local sports bodies early next year to discuss the maintenance cff sports grounds, the Akaroa County Council was told. The county clerk (Mr L. G. Eade) had reported on the annual costs of maintaining various sports grounds. He said that last year £l6OO had been spent extending and resurfacing the tennis and basketball courts, and this year a further £4OO would be spent on fencing and other work. A grant of £620 had been received from the council’s subdivision reserve account towards this work, making the net cost of improvements in these two years £l3BO. It was estimated this amount spread over several years, plus future annual maintenance, would represent an annual cost of £B5. The annual cost of maintaining the recreation ground was £l2O and that of maintaining the croquet green was £B5, giving a total annual expenditure of £290. Revenue received annually from the tennis, basketball, football, cricket and croquet clubs and sundry donations was £65.

He would recommend that the floor of the Akaroa Coronation Library be repaired, and that painting the exterior be considered in next year’s work, Mr J. S. Truman had told the committee. TTie chairman (the Rev. W. R. Dewey) said increasing the annual grant to the library could also be considered in next year’s estimates.
