RACING Glenmist Wins Open Race At Omoto

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Glenmist, which had won his last three starts in hack company, made a winning step to open class when he took the Axemen’s Handicap, the feature event on the second day of the Grey mouth Jockey Club’s meeting at Omoto on Saturday.

The double was completed by Allegretto, and the pair paid £63 18s for £l.

The on-course double, won by Red Treasure and Barcape, paid £lO 17s for £l.

The meeting was held in showery weather and the track was heavy. Glenmist had won twice over a mile and a quarter last month at Hokitika and also over a mile at Omoto last Monday.

The six-year-old gelding had I started once previously in! open company, at Reefton last January when he finished fourth behind Morris Francis, General Gilbert and Totara Lad. BEGAN BEST Totara Lad, Jester Jinks, Duplex and Clipper began best in the Axemen’s Handicap with Glenmist tailed off last. Passing the stand Duplex led Jester Jinks, Totara Lad, Mister Bud, Ursinus, Prince Callan, Last Count and Glenmist.

Going down the back Mister Bud had improved to be with Jester Jinks, close behind Duplex. Clipper and Totara Lad were next, with Glenmist still at the rear.

Rounding the home bend Mister Bud had reached the front by about two lengths from Totara Lad, Jester Jinks, which was starting to

weaken, and Glenmist, which! was making ground on the! outside. Mister Bud was unable to withstand Glenmist’s solid challenge, was caught a few! yards from the post and went down by a long neck. Totara Lad was two lengths away third, with six lengths to Jester Jinks. Then came Duplex, Clipper, Prince Callan, Last Count and Ursinus. SECOND LEG

A furlong and a half after the start of the Stewards’ Handicap, Taxman was showing the way to His Host, Rae’s Hope, Waitohi, Silver Shell,

iJayess, Allegretto and El Beka, with Golden Vanity Stalled off. Down the back Taxman led !from His Host, Rae’s Hope and Waitohi, with Allegretto well back. Waitohi was first into the straight, from Taxman and His Host, with Allegretto improving rapidly wider out.

Allegretto finished too strongly for his opponents to win comfortably from Taxman, which was a neck in front of Waitohi. Then came El Beka, Silver Shell, Jayess. Golden Vanity, His Host and Rae’s Hope.
