OAKS TO STYLOS

Corwar Second Stylos caused a minor upset when she led from end to end in the New Zealand Oaks on Saturday. In contrast with her showing at Orari last Tuesday, when she wrecked her chance at the start, Stylos did not make the slightest mistake.

She was skilfully raced by D. C. Watts, who had not previously had success in the race. She paced the 12 furlongs in 3min 16 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 1 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. Raced by her Oxford breeder. Mr A. C. Hooper, ■Stylos is trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron. She lis by Johnny Globe, which sired an earlier Oaks winner, , Wendy Dawn, from the Lucky Hanover mare. Romanos, a moderate performer a few years ago when trained by Cameron. Gilt. Streakaway, Gay Light, Demure, Renata, Solinos and Alandria gave ground at the start. Stylos was quickly in front, with the hot favourite, Corwar, racing on the outside of I Light Thaw. Then came Young [Miss and Golden Sands. Stylos led for home Ahead of Corwar, Light Thaw, Golden Sands, which was badly pocketed, Alandria, Solina, Young Miss and Demure.

Stylos did best to win by a short length. Light Thaw was only half a head from Corwar, with a length to Golden Sands, which looked unlucky. Alandria was a fair fifth, ahead of Young Miss, Solina and Shady Maid, with a gap to Caviare.
