TROTTING FIELDER IN FINE ADDINGTON WIN

Auckland Cup Start Guaranteed

Fielder qualified to start in the Auckland Cup later in the month when he held off a strong challenge from Chequer Board by half a length in the President’s Handicap at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Fielder dominated the betting on the race and paid £3 4s for a win and £1 Ils for a place.

Fielder was a costly failure at the cup meeting last month when he failed to return a dividend although he paced splendid races.

On Saturday he was driven by D. J. Townley, who had him better positioned, although three wide, over the last seven furlongs.

Raced by his Oamaru breeder-trainer, J. W. Dalgety, Fielder is a showy six-year-old stallion by Hal Tryax from Rowen Lass. He could be one of the leading pacers In major autumn races. Admire broke at the start. Adorata led out from Vista

: Abbey and Colours Flying. The last-named worked to the I front after two furlongs and a half. Buchanan moved up three [wide from the seven furlongs, i with Fielder following him. Colours Flying still had charge racing to the straight. Terrace Dale was close, just ahead of Buchanan, Adorato, Password, Fielder, Vista Abbey, Landlord and Admire. Fielder quickly assumed control and it was late in the race that he looked likely to be tested. Chequer Board, one of the tail-enders at the two furlongs, came with a

tremendous run wide out on the track and failed by half a length to catch the favourite. Chequer Board should make amends next time out. Landlord came home fairly well for third a length further back, with a head to Terrace Dale and Password, which dead-heated. Adorato was half a length away sixth, ahead of Allakasam, Buchanan and Quesnel. Paid £23 The consistent Nelson-owned mare, Nocatchem, showed that some strenuous racing had not dulled her ability when, at odds of 6 to 1, she won the New Brighton Stakes, the second leg of the main double. The Fielder-Nocatchem combination paid £23 11s 6d for £l. Nocatchem was quickly in front and she set a sound pace. Barbuda and Bright Enterprise were closest to her at the straight entrance, but she did best over the last 75 yards to win by a neck. Bright Enterprise paced a useful race for second, half a head in front of Co Pilot, which looked a shade unlucky. He was badly placed at the furlong post, but came fast once clear. He was four lengths in front of Ulight which came fast from the rear to shade Pleasant Lad. which had his chance. Spry was next, but was well beaten. Then came Roydon Prince and Richard Hanover, which was always well back.
