Widening Orphan Plan

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. Determination to press on with Labour’s plan to help orphans in Vietnam was expressed today by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). Mr Kirk said the Government would be approached on the question of assisting after

preliminary work on the proposal had been done. “There is no question of New Zealand’s capacity to help—it can and it must,” he said.

He emphasised that a political campaign was not contemplated. “It should be a New Zealand campaign.” Mr Kirk said some organisations were operating in the field at present and some existing organisation could provide the best basis upon which to work. During the final week of

the election campaign, Mr Kirk announced that the Labour Party—whether it became the Government or not —would organise the construction and staffing of an orphanage in South Vietnam. Mr 'Kirk said today he had been quite encouraged by the response.

Mr Kirk said the project would be approached on the broadest possible front so that “everyone of good will who wants to help will be able to help.”
