SANFORD’S HIGH COSTS
Export Trade Uneconomic (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. Increased prices now payable to fishermen, coupled with other cost increases, made export trade in the main varieties oi fish uneconomic, said the chairman of Sanford, Ltd. (Mr F. V. Lindberg) in his annual report for the year to August 31. Exports by the company declined during the year. If allowed to continue, the position would seriously affect fish exports in the coming year.
Although the industry offered excellent long-term opportunities for economical development in export markets, a material increase in earnings would only be possible by a realistic approach by fishermen to the problems and a practical realisation by the Government of difficulties and rising costs.
In spite of repeated approaches, the Government had apparently failed to appreciate what was necessary.
