Australia Subdued By Seam Attack

(Special Correspondent NZ.P.A.) EAST LONDON. Australia, after a grim struggle for runs, scored 217 for seven wickets on the second day of its match against the South African XI at East Londpn on Saturday.

At stumps Australia was still 156 runs short of the South African XI first-innings total of 373.

Accurate seam and spin bowling forced Australia into the most defensive and undistinguished batting performance of the tour.

R. M. Cowper, in a 229minute innings of 86, and W. M. Lawry, who made a patient 48, were the only Australians to offer stiff resistance. The South African Xi’s four seam bowlers gave nothing away in a dull and humid atmosphere and Australia had a day-long struggle for runs. Most successful of the South African bowlers, however, was the off-spinner, D. B. Pithey, who captured 52 for two, from 30 overs, 13 of them maidens. SOUTH AFRICA XI First Innings T.
