Suburban Games

The fourth round games in suburban cricket ended on Saturday in good conditions. Beckenham easily gained first innings points over Sumner. Only T. Smitheram with an unbeaten 61 offered any real resistance to the steady bowling of the competition leaders. K. Townsend was outstanding. Forced to follow on, Sumner fared no better and at close of play had lost nine second innings wickets. Sumner did not lose any opportunity to score runs, although wickets felt regularly. Waltham failed to fulfil expectations and was dismissed for 158 with only J. Milne showing any real form with a good knock of 76. Merivaie had a hard-earned success at the expense of Papanut, winning by the closest of margins, and evening their narrow loss of last season to Papanui by two runs.
