Plaque Tribute To Brother

A plaque erected as as tribute to the Rev. Brother J. I. McClintock, the first principal of St. Thomas’s Roman Catholic College, Sockburn, was unveiled yesterday afternoon. Brother McClintock will complete his six-year term of office at the end of the year. The plaque, which depicts Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, is over the main entrance to the school’s new two-storey science block. It reads: “Erected by the parents, friends, and old boys of St. Thomas’s College as a tribute to the Rev. Brother J. I. McClintock, the first principal of the college. 19611966.”

St. Thomas's College was opened in 1961 by the late Bishop Joyce. It had a roll of 110 boys which has now grown to 250. The school has a staff of six brothers and two lay teachers. Brother McClintock, who is a New Zealander, was at the Christian Brothers’ College, Waverley, Sydney, when he was appointed the first principal of St. Thomas’s. Before that he was teaching at St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, for 15 years. Speakers at yesterday's ceremony were Mr J. Yardley, president of the Parents’ and Friends’ Association, and Brother McClintock. Brother McClintock’s successor has not yet been appointed.

MR L. A. ATKINSON, chairman of the State Services Commission, who will retire on December 31. He has been chairman of the commission, and its predecessor, the Public Service Commission, since 1958. He joined the Public Service in 1924 as a cadet with the Customs Department, Wellington, and in 1940 was one of the first intake for the Diploma of Public Administration at Victoria University College.
