Monowai Superior

Monowai and Spreydon held Christchurch West and Avon respectively in two interesting women’s softball games on Saturday. Results: Monowai 7, Christchurch West 5. Spreydon 6, Avon 3. Christchurch West, three up three down in its first three innings, opened its account in the fourth innings when L. Lydlate scored on errors. She was followed home by C. Mullally on a two-base hit by K. Noonan. In its first innings J. Dellaney hit a two-bagger and, after reaching third, scored on a sacrifice by B. Guy. Errors and a hit by J. Patterson enabled Mullally and Noonan to score in the sixth. In spite of a good hit by L. Lydlate, Christchurch West failed to score in its last bat. J. Moher, of Monowai, scored her side’s only run in the first on a hit by M. Hapuku. B. Turbott, with good base running, scored on another hit by Hapuku in the second. A threebase hit by C. Brown and a hit by B. Maklnson brought two runs for Monowai in its fourth. Hits by L. Leask and B. Makinson and errors allowed Monowai another three runs in its fifth. Scoreless in its sixth, Monowai did not require its last bat to win, 7-5. Spreydon began well, hits by H. Wicks and H. Diggs and a hard drive by S. Pateman bringing three runs. Three up three down in its second, Spreydon kept the pressure on. In the third, H. Diggs, J. Steel and S. Marsh all hit safely and, aided by errors, scored three more runs. Spreydon never looked likely to score in its next three innings. In its last a double play between H. Middlemiss, J. Baker and M. Balloch ended its chances.

Three up three down in its first, Avon was retired scoreless with loaded bases in its second. With two outs in its third, J. Baker and B. Hannigan drove the ball with power and Baker scored.

Avon’s only run of the fourth came after a three bagger by B. Clark. Avon looked dangerous in the sixth when, after having two out, it fought back and with bases loaded a runner was dismissed at home plate. Other results:—

Second Grade.—Vanguard 13, Monowai B 4; Teachers’ College 10, Monowai A 9; Christchurch West 17; Kaiapoi 4. Third Grade.—Christchurch West 12, Avon 9; Monowai 39, Templeton 9.
