Zoo Consignment
A keeper from the Auckland Zoo will fly to Sydney soon to supervise the transport of one of the largest collections of animals to be brought to the zoo in a single consignment. The animals, which have been bought from the Taronga Park Zoo include a pair of African antelopes and three Indian antelopes, three Barbary sheep, three white-tailed deer, and a female hippopotamus to replace the one which died recently. The cost, including shipping, is expected to be £l5OO. Cloudy Day Skies were cloudy in Christchurch yesterday, but after the light north-easterly wind which blew in the morning changed to fresh northwesterlies, the temperatures rose to a maximum of 78 degrees at Harewood at 3 p.m. At 6 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 54 degrees, rising to 64 degrees at 9 a.m., and by noon the temperature was 74 degrees. At the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. a temperature of 77 degrees was recorded. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 80 degrees at 4.30 p.m. 50,000 Expected It was hoped that 50,000 people would take part in the Lenten studies programmes organised by the National Council of Churches, said the assistant general secretary (the Rev. R. M. O’Grady). It would be the biggest church programme at the parish level organised in New Zealand, and already training classes for leaders were being held in 150 places.
