RACING Golden Vanity Shapes Well In Fast Sprint

Apache was the winner, but Golden Vanity took the honours when they were paired for one of the fastest gallops on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday.

Apache (B. Edens) won the gallop by a length, but this was a diminishing margin over Golden Vanity (N. Cowles), which had the worse of the weights. They started near the six furlongs and sped the last half-mile in 48 2-ssec and the final three furlongs in 36sec. G. R. Pelling has the Oma-kau-owned Golden Vanity looking solid and bright for a summer campaign, and the results could be good. Last Dip (Cowles) sprinted her half-mile in 51 2-ssec. She is engaged at Omoto on Saturday, but her engagement might not be continued if the ground is heavy. Consistent Gunga Din (P. Williams) and Winscombe (D. Tucker) appeared to be fairly evenly matched over half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Gunga Din has been a consistent performer from A. J. Williams’s stable this season, and earned his win /in the high-weight on the final day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. Standout, now back with his owner, J. C. Tomkinson, after a course of schooling in the Williams stable at Belfast, sprinted seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 34sec, quickening for the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. He has been entered for the main race at the Hororata meeting, and could make an early show of form on a firm track.

Court ran three furlongs in

40sec. Pango followed in 39 4-ssec, and Rural in 38 2-5 sec.

Tsunami (D. Tucker) and Brown Brocade (R. Moir) did well to run seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last half-mile in 51sec and the final three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Tsunami has thrived on a light racing programme this season, and C. C. McCarthy should not find it difficult to place him to advantage at summer meetings.

Faraday (C. T. Wilson) recorded Imin 32 2-ssec for seven furlongs and 52sec for the last half-mile

Caprin (J. Kerkvliet) also turned a scheduled threequarter pace run, into an earnest gallop and finished seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-5 sec, the last three in 40sec. Sabell (E. G. Low) and Millie Small (F. H. Skelton) were quickly up to a solid pace from the six furlongs. They

ran the opening two in 27 1-5 see, the three in 40 3-ssee, and the distance in Imin 19 4-ssec. Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) finished his work with three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. He raced solidly and at times unluckily against the top sprinters at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and his second win for the season does not look far distant.

Talic (D. Tucker) and Te Mania (A. Swanson) dashed over half a mile in 50 4-ssec, the final three in 37 l-ssec. May Wyne (F. H. Skelton) and Clive Bank (W. Hastie) followed in 51sec, and Ramadan (D. Tucker) and Dipmate (J. Kerkvliet) in 51 4-ssec. Sir Limond was returned to Riccarton after his race on the first day of the Grey mouth meeting. He is shown as an acceptor for the Cobden Hack Handicap on Saturday, but will not run.
