Corwar In Fine Trial For Oaks

Convar confirmed her position as early favourite for the New Zealand Oaks on Saturday night at Addington Raceway when she beat Authentic in the Orari Challenge Stakes yesterday.

After a slow start, Corwar moved up three wide from the five furlongs. She took a short lead about the furlong and W. E. Lowe only had to flick the whip at her to keep her going for a narrow’ but decisive win.

Raced by her Hinds breeder-1 trainer. W. E. Lowe, Corwar is by Light Brigade from Col-I mar. She started her race; career on October 26 when] she finished a good second to Frostibon at Addington. Corwar, High Earl. Shady: Maid, Authentic, Alandria, Seafield Countess. Young Miss, Gay Light and Arkle, which was pulled up, were among those to lose ground at the start.

Luckywood set a fairly easy pace until Authentic improved fast to join her in front near the five furlongs. Authentic was followed through by Corwar. Corwar continued her run and was outside Authentic and Luckywood racing to the straight with Zan Star, Johnny Kawa. Light Thaw, Junior Whip, Mokoreta and High Earl prominent and Gilt trying for a run along the inner. Corwar took a short lead near the furlong post and won easily by a short head from Authentic.

Johnny Kawa paced a sound race for third a length away, a head in front of Zan Star, which had every chance. Gilt, a rival of Corwar in the Oaks, came home strongly for fifth close up, clear of M&oreta,

The first leg, ’ the Waihi Improvers’ Handi- , cap, was won by Royal Fame, , which was bracketed with i Stylos. The Royal Fame—- ! Corwar combination paid £l7 ■ 8s 6d for £1 There was considerable

criticism of the doubles totalisator indicator, which showed the bracket to be paying a dividend of £ls until closing time. Actually the bracket was favourite with doubles betters, carrying 951 10s tickets —in a pool of 4386. Royal Fame was confidently driven by N. S. Benny. He ranged up to Ranganui in the lead just inside the furlong and came on to win untested by three lengths, Ranganui paced a useful race for second after attempting to lead over the last half-

mile. Roydon Frost, which met trouble at the straight entrance, was two lengths and a half back third. There was merit in his placing. Finesse battled on for fourth half a length back, lust

ahead of Cheribon, with Final Count following. Glen Bell, after being a fair way back early, finished strongly for a decisive win in the Rangitata Handicap. The near-outsider, Black Frost, came home well for second, clear of Misty Light, Wire Wound, Tehaw and Say Diana. Runaway Win Young Morris, the winner of the New Zealand Trotting Stakes last term, proved a class above his rivals in the Stewards’ Handicap. He took the lead when Norwood Lass broke after about a furlong and a half, and from then he had the field at his mercy. He was the only horse trotting very strongly over the final furlong and won by 13 lengths. Cordsworth, after being within two lengths of the winner racing to the straight, stopped badly, but held second by a head from the fairly strong finisher, Tatsy Brigade, which was a good way back early. Rapparee shaped like an early improver when he finished a dose fourth, ahead of Moonlight Bay and Halberg, which broke with a furlong left. Spanaway gained her third successive win from four starts when she held off Goldmount by half a head in the Raukapuka Handicap. Spanaway led from end to end and fought on gamely for her win.

Goldmount came home strongly along the inside and just failed to get up. He was a length in front of Hal Air, which received the run of the race and looked a winning prospect just inside the furlong.

Rola Coaster made up ground for fourth two lengths away, just ahead of Unkwnod

Lady, Carefree and Alray. Alray lost ground at the start, as did Kildare Dan, Dryden Pal and Angel Lass. Option broke when improving in second place near the halfmile. Second Win Annfield gave W. E. Lowe his second success as an owner-trainer-driver when she got up to nose Solina out of first in the last stride of the First Temuka Handicap. Annfield was a firm favourite after two second placings. She is a likely type of four-year-old mare by Thurber Frost from Trusty Lad. Annfield was towards the middle of the field until fairly late in the race. Solina loked likelv to win at the furlong, but Annfield came home well to shade her. Sequoia was beaten off third, ahead of Lynford, Lachlan and Los Altos, which did not secure a clear nin in the straight. Limelight, after racing in the middle of the field early, sprinted up near the halfmile and moved into second place soon afterwards. He took a short lead inside the furlong and although strongly challenged by Lyncris, held on to win by half a length. Lyncris was untroubled to hold second place, well clear of Early Frost, and Demure, which made up a lot of ground. Boy Logan headed a tired remainder.
