Rising Freights

The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) told the transport and handling of overseas trade conference today that in 10 years freight rates on lamb had risen 30 per cent. Freight 10 years ago represented 12 per cent of lamb export value, but next January it was likely to be 20 per cent.
Butter and cheese freight rates were up 24 per cent, and apples 30 per cent.
From 1954 to 1965, freight costs on apples and pears exported had been in the range 41-69 per cent of the net f.o.b. value.
Wool freight rates had increased nearly 29 per cent since 1955.
