MISS V. A. MORGAN (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. Nov. 29. Miss Valmai Adelaide Morgan, who died at Titnaru on Monday, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs R. H. Morgan, and a greatgranddaughter of Captain John Parsons, the Port of Lyttelton’s first harbourmaster. As commander of the East Indiaman Lady Nugent, Captain Parsons brought John Godley and his family to New Zealand to found the Canterbury settlement. Born in Christchurch, Miss Morgan was educated at Christchurch Technical College. She was a Canterbury women's hockey representative. and played A grade competitive tennis in Auckland, Wellington and South Canterbury. Miss Morgan was a Red Cross transport driver in Timaru during the Second World War, and was an honorary member of the section.
She assisted with relief work at the time of the Napier earthquake, and was commended by the police for the part she played as the sole woman member of a rescue team in the Dobson Glacier region in 1947. Miss Morgan was nurse receptionist to Dr. K. J. Talbot and his father, the late Dr. L. S. Talbot, for 31 years. She was a member of the Timaru Ladies’ Golf Club for the same period, and was a former member of the Wai-iti Tennis Club and the South Canterbury Drama League.
