Carpenters Lift Ban On Jobs
The bans imposed on the Fletcher Construction Company’s jobs in Christchurch were yesterday lifted by the Canterbury Carpenters’ Union, said the secretary (Mr R. J. Pitcairn).
The decision was made at a stop-work meeting attended by about 100 men from Fletcher jobs, and union officials yesterday afternoon. The meeting, in the Trades Hall, lasted an hour and 25 minutes.
Mr Pitcairn said the object of the lifting of the ban was to facilitate settlement of the dispute by negotiation. A black ban was imposed more than a fortnight ago on Fletcher’s contract at the In-
ternational Harvester Company project in Blenheim road. Labouring work was also banned on Fletcher jobs still working. The dispute arose over tradesmen on Fletcher jobs in Christchurch wanting the same rates of pay and condiions as those received by company employees in Wellington and Auckland. Negotiations between the union and the management are expected to begin soon.
