Riley’s Impressive Brabin Cup Trial
Only one of the “fringe” players. J. D. Riley, made a notable impression on the first day of the Brabin Cup cricket trial at Hagley Oval yesterday.
Riley, who has been batting well and scoring consistently in club cricket, was the best of the batsmen in B. J. Patchett’s XI and very nearly the best on show during the day. His neat placements and calm, confident stroke-mak-ing probably assured him of a place in the tournament team. Of the other batsmen, C. McKenzie was unsure for much of his innings, although he batted attractively later.
The openers. Patchett and D. W. Stead, made a solid start even if they did not give any impression of solidity. The casual spinners. R. W. Anderson and I. M. Walter,
had moments of success but the best of the bowlers was the opener, D. R. Phillipson, who toiled almost throughout the morning. A. R. Hounsell was reasonably steady but won no admiration for bowling short to late-order batsmen.
The hard-hitting Anderson and an unflurried Walter scored with comfort off a thin attack.
