Grants By N.C.C.
Three grants for overseas youth work projects and aid for the Solomon Islands, damaged by cyclones, have been made by the National Council of Churches, the inter-church aid secretary (Mr F. G. Heard) said yesterday.
The Council has sent £lOOO to the Solomons in answer to a personal appeal from the Bishop of Melanesia (the Rt Rev. A. Hill). The cyclone, which made 8000 people homeless on the island of Malaita, made the provision of medical treatment for a large number, and the rebuilding of many villages, necessary, the Bishop said. A church ship, the M. V. Baddeley in the charge of Archdeacon P. Thompson, is at present travelling around the island to assess damage. Grants of £2OO have been made for youth work projects in Korea, Burma, and the Cameround.
The grant to Korea will aid study programmes for a youth ministry among secondary school students; in Burma it will help the provision of a full-time secretary and ecumenical study programme in the United Christian Church of Burma; and in the Cameroun, it will help United Christian Boy Scouts’ Association.
