W. Samoa Independence Anniversary Stamps
A stamp issue to commemorate the fifth anniversary of independence in Western Samoa would be on sale on January 16, 1967, the Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday. The stamps, which are of four denominations—3d, Bd, 2s and 3s—will be on sale at the chief post offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and the Philatellic Bureau, 66A Courtenay place, Wellington. Mr Wilson said that firstday covers would be available from the Chief Postmaster, Apia, at the cost of 2d each. A service fee of 2d would also be charged. Self-pre-pared covers could also be forwarded and for these only
the 2d service fee for affixing the stamps was payable for each cover.
Orders for stamps and firstday cancellations would have to be accompanied by a remittance covering the cost of the stamps and any envelopes required, and also the service fee. Orders should be forwarded to reach the Chief Postmaster, Apia, Western Samoa, not later than January 9 next year, Mr Wilson said.
No facilities for cashing New Zealand postal notes were available in Western Samoa, and remittances should be by money order, bank draft or British postal order. Unless stocks were exhausted, the special issue would be withdrawn from sale on April 16, 1967. The stamps will not be valid in New Zealand.
Mr Wilson asked that orders for the anniversary stamps be made separately from those for any other Western Samoan stamps.
