CANTERBURY FENCING

Import Of Standards

Dissatisfaction with the continuing shortage of fencing standards was expressed at a meeting of the North Canterbury Agricultural Advisory Committee. Through the Agricultural Production Council the committee will seek to have the import licensing authority reconsider the separation of licences for the import of the material for fencing standards from that for other uses.

According to advice from the Department of Industries and Commerce given to the meeting, the position in other parts of the country seemed to be satisfactory, and steps were being taken to remedy the position in Canterbury. “This comes in the same classification as wrought iron,” said Mr W. N. Dunlop. “In our opinion this is a separate item and it should not be hard to separate, but they say that it is.” The chairman (Mr R. H. Bedford) said that in investigation was being made into the position in Wellington. “The position is still very unsatisfactory and has not been rectified,” said Mr A. H. Gould. Mr Bedford said that it seemed licences for fencing standards were held by people other than those who wanted to import it. This type of fencing, was used only in Canterbury. There were also shortages of tractors and truck tyres, Mr Bedford said. The assistant secretary of the Agricultural Production Council (Mr C. I. Blincoe) said that the Customs Department had advised that further supplies of a particular brand of ear tag would be imported until local manufacture began early next year.
