Dismissal Denied

A spokesman for the Fletcher Construction Company on Wednesday denied an allegation made by the secretary of the Canterbury Carpenters’ Union (Mr R. J. Pitcairn) that a man had been dismissed for refusing to work on a job that had been declared black.

“This contract, declared black by the union members for no other reason than to force the firm to agree to further increases in hourly rates and extra travelling time, is an action that is a breach of the award, and therefore cannot be recognised by us,” said the company spokesman. “Some months ago a sum of 2d an hour was offered to union members and the refusal of this offer has already cost the workers about £8 each.

“This firm has the full support of the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association who are fully conversant and in full agreement with the action taken by us.” The black ban has been placed on the Fletcher Construction Company contract at the International Harvester Company site in Blenheim road.
