... Davis Changes To Cycling
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON.
One of New Zealand’s greatest athletes, J. L. Davies, is to take up competitive cycling.
Davies has decided to retire from all types of running for the next 12 months because of a persistent achilles tendon injury.
In an effort to retain some of his superb physical fitness, he will join another former athlete, N. I. Scott in the hard world of racing cyclists. Scott, who last represented New Zealand at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was forced to retire from running because of achilles trouble. This season he distinguished himself during the gruelling Dulux six-day cycle race.
Davies is the New Zealand one mile champion and won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympic 1500 metres.
