"BOMBS ' REMARK CAUSES UPSET
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, November 23. Angry reaction to the “basinful of bombs” statement by New Zealand’s retiring Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) was received by New Zealand House this morning.
After taking a number or telephone calls expressing concern at Mr Eyre’s sentiments, New Zealand officials decided to seek “elucidation” from Wellington.
A spokesman said: “We are getting a number of inquiries about the statement, and we are now seeking elucidation from Wellington. “Up until now we have received no explanation from Wellington, and have no real details about the background in which Mr Eyre’s remarks were reportedly made.” IN FULL The “Guardian” today head lined its account of the incident as “Bombs By The Basinful.” and published in full Mr Eyre’s reported reply to a heckler: “Children died in London
from bombs too. . . . We are not dealing with ourselves, we are dealing with Oriental people. They are different from ourselves.”
According to a Press Association message from Dunedin about 400 people tonight heard the National candidate for Dunedin Central, Mr John Farry, dissociate himself from the reported comment by Mr Eyre that he “would give North Vietnam a basinful of bombs.”
