The Press’’ Special Service

INVERCARGILL.

After failing to show up against the middle distance hacks on the first day Segundo scored a clear-cut success in the Medallist Handicap, the main event and first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s spring meeting yesterday.

Segundo, which had winning form as a hurdler and was still eligible for hack events, was having his first start in open company.

Idol Prince capped off some good recent placed form by beating the sprinters in the

Agfa Rapid Sprint and rounded off the T.A.B. double with Segundo to return £77 5s for £l.

The failure of the hot favourite. Middy, was something of a bombshell. He was nicely placed behind the leaders to the home turn, but was soon beaten and had only Lady Topaz behind him at the ’ finish. REVELLED IN GOING Segundo revelled in the heavy i ground to win the Medallist Handicap by a decisive margin. ; He took a clear lead early inside the furlong and although i the hot favourite. Manners. I made a game effort, Segundo I did not look like being beaten, i He was toward the rear of the I field at the half mile but moved ’ on the irfner at the home turn to follow Dunsun and Silver Spire into the straight, where Manners had improved from the rear. Pahi, Beginner’s Luck and Castle Gregory were next. Dunsun took a short lead but he was no match for Segundo, which was soon clear and carried on to win decisively by two lengths. DISPUTED LEAD Castle Flight and Hazy Light disputed the early lead in the second leg. At the half-mile Castle Flight had taken a clear lead from Middy and Idol Prince, on terms ahead of Hazy Light. Idol Prince and Castle Flight shared the pace-making at the three but at the straight entrance Idol Prince had taken a clear lead from Castle Flight, with Longwood Light and Donnaway next. Idol Prince was three lengths clear on straightening up and he came on to win by two lengths and a half from Donnaway. Castle Flight held third by three lengths from Hazy Light. The weather was fine, but the track was easy after earlier rain. Results: PUKEMAORI HURDLES, £325; lim.—l/l NARATAM (3) 9-13 W. J. Hillis 1; 1/1 ARABIAN LIGHT <3a) J. D.
