Opposes Overseas Farm Ownership

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, November 23. The Federation of Labour would oppose by all means in its power foreign ownership of New Zealand farmland, the secretary (Mr K. M. Baxter) said today.

The federation’s national executive had recently written to the Minister of Agri-

culture (Mr Taiboys) placing its opposition to land sales to United States interests “squarely before him,” he said.

Foreign speculators investing in New Zealand farm land could well be one of the factors pressing up the price of land to uneconomic levels for local producers. The National candidate for Raglan, Mr D. J. Carter, had told Waikato Federated Farmers that the increase in land values last year was estimated to be 18 per cent.

Mr Baxter said the federation’s view was that New Zealanders must have preference in farming and cultivating the land. Land unsuitable for pastoral purposes should be taken over for forestry.
