21 THIS WEEK

More than 100 past and present members of the 20th Christchurch Company of the Girls’ Brigade will celebrate the company’s twenty-first anniversary this week-end. The company, which is associated with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Cashel street, is one of the two still serving the inner city area. The Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning) will be the inspecting officer at the annual display in St. Patil’s Church Hall on Saturday evening, and she will also present the awards gained during the year.

The company was registered on June 13, 1945. The first captain was Miss N. Maunder, and the first chaplain was the Very Rev. S. C. Francis. There were 12 on the roll the first year. In the 25 years there have been nine captains.

The company experienced difficulty with leadership and in 1956 went into recess for 12 months.

Mrs K. J. Gray, the present company captain, is also in charge of the junior section.
