Knowledge Of Mountains 'Valuable In Antarctic’
(N.Z. Press Association) SCOTT BASE, Nov. 21. “Experience gained in the mountains of New Zealand is good training for life in Antarctica,” said the president of the Federated Mountain Clubs (Mr A. J. Heine). “People who have been accepted by companions in the mountains in New Zealand contribute to the success of Antarctic projects. “In the Antarctic environment, peoples’ characters are magnified and the good or bad shows more clearly than in everyday New Zealand life. “A knowledge that your character has been accepted by small groups under adverse conditions in parts of New Zealand is an advantage to men in Antarctica,” said Mr Heine. This is Mr Heine’s tenth summer at Scott Base. He came to Antarctica with the first party, which built the base, and has wintered there once. In the 1950-60 summer Mr Heine led a four-nation party on a 1500-mile traverse of Victoria Land. After the traverse he went to the Institute of Polar Studies at Ohio State University to help analyse data
from the expedition. Later he visited polar and glacialogical institutes through the Northern Hemisphere. Each summer at Scott Base Mr Heine has been continuing a glacialogical project, plotting movements of the McMurdo ice shelf.
