Autobank Shapes Well In Training
"The Press’’ Special Service INVERCARGILL. The Washdyke-trained Autobank, which has done particularly well since he won on the first day of the Southland Racing Club's spring meeting, sprinted three furlongs in dashing style at Invercargill yesterday. Autobank was never off the bit, but sped over three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. He should complete a double for the meeting in the Tuatapere Handicap today. The trestles were 45ft out on the course proper and this part of the track was firm underneath although cutting out slightly. Nearer the rails, where there is not so much grass, conditions are not so good, and the going was shifting. Ronda, which appreciated the firmer going, worked over a round with Segundo. Ronda, which was ridden by her trainer, R. E. Humphries, was a neck in front of Segundo (J. F. Carvalho) after sprinting the last three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. It was a smart gallop on the part of Ronda, which will not
start if conditions deteriorate today. Segundo will be a lightweight chance in the Medallist Suit Handicap, the first leg of the double. He will be ridden by P. J. Silver. Soncerai put some dash into her work over a mile and a quarter. She ran the last four furlongs in 52sec and the final three in 37 4-ssec.
Left Over was just ahead of Kelvin Lad after half a mile in 51sec, the last three furlongs in 38 3-ssec.
Argyle Boy, which was withdrawn on the first day because of the soft track, was being eased over the final stages of half a mile in 52sec. Sprint Tasks Most of the candidates for the second day of the Southland meeting were restricted to three-furlong sprints. Chimaera, with his trainer, S. G. Shaw, up, sprinted well in 39 l-ssec. Others to work over three furlongs were Ronrlco, 39 2-ssec, Donnaway, 38sec, Why Hart, 39 3-ssec, d’Archaic and Carla, 38sec, Petite Amie, 42sec and Satinette, 41 3-ssec.
Darnburgh, which will start in the Pukemaori Hurdles in preference to the Oreti Handicap, schooled satisfactorily. Ridden by his race rider, C. L. Reeves, Darnburgh jumped with Proud Boy, which shaped well in his first school in company.
