EVIDENCE ON FIGHT

Manslaughter Hearing (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Nov. 22. Evidence at the hearing of a manslaughter charge against a British seaman, David John Barnett, aged 22, arising from a fight between British seamen and Port Chalmers youths on October 1 was completed in the Supreme Court today. The charge arises from the death of John Warren Redington, aged 19, of Port Chalmers, in hospital, two days after the fight. Mr M. J. Knuckey is appearing for Barnett and Mr J; B. Deaker for the Crown. Barnett has pleaded uot guilty before Mr Justice Henry and a jury of eight men and four women.

Addresses to the jury and the summing up of the Judge will be heard tomorrow.

A prosecution witness, Barry John Gray, shop assistant, said he saw Barnett pursuing John Redington with a piece of wood, and strike a blow which caught Redington on the back of the head and shoulder. Redington fell to the ground.

Barnett, formerly a deck hand on the Port Phillip, said several youths armed with pieces of wood had advanced on him. He had warded off a blow from one, seized a piece of wood and struck back a youth who fell.
