FIRST RUN OF SEASON
The New Zealand sprint champion, A. G. Steel, will make his first competitive appearance of the season at the Pat Boot Memorial meeting, to be held at Rugby Park on December 10.
Although he has not yet started training seriously, he has agreed to turn out for his club, High School Old Bovs, in the 4 x 110 yd and 4 x 220 yd relays at the meeting.
He may also run the 220yds leg of a medley relay. “I will not be taking part in any straight sprint races before January, if I do at all. The main thing is to help the club out,” he said when asked to comment on his entry in the relays. Steel has had one training session on the sand at Woodend with his coach, Mr P. Davies, but hopes to train regularly there from now on. A New Zealand Rugby representative last season, he will be beginning weight training for Rugby in about two weeks.
Later he plans to step up his running a bit and may come out for the “odd event” at Rugby Park. Steel said that he did not want to compete in sprint events unless he was reason-
ably fit, although he would possibly come out earlier than January if his training showed he was in good form. “This is most unlikely because I have not done the work,” he said.
