Four New Bridges Needed In City
A schedule of new bridges required as part of the master transport plan was presented to the City Council last evening by its works and services committee.
The schedule and costs were listed as:—Kilmore street. £40,000, 1968-69: Ensors road, £20,000, 1969-70; Durham street, £30.000, 1970-75: Kerrs road. £30,000. 1975-1980. Linking of the east and west parts of Kilmore street was necessary in the development of streets north of the city centre, the committee said. The bridge would be close to the existing Madras street bridge, which was due to be replaced soon, and the two structures would be designed to harmonise. The connexion of Ensors road to St. Martins road was
I vital to the development of a 'good cross-city in the locality A bridge orientated northsouth and connecting the north and south parts of Durham street was necessary to facilitate use of the street as a major distributor west of the city centre. The location had not been decided, but it might be expected to be between Cashel street and Gloucester street.
A bridge linking Kerrs road to Locksley avenue would provide not only an excellent north-south route between the Linwood-Bromley and Burwood areas, but would also be of benefit to the immediate locality. The committee said an approach was being made to the National Roads Board for an increased rate of financial assistance for two of the bridges on the existing replacement programme—Madras street and South Brighton. If similar assistance was available for the four new bridges, the council’s expenditure on bridges could be kept at the level of recent years without any significant slowing of progress.
