CHRISTMAS MAIL RUSH
Casual Staff To
Be Engaged
The Post Office will employ more than 400 additional temporary staff in the Christchurch district to cope with heavy Christmas business. Most of the additional workers will be engaged early next month to tackle the anticipated record volume of mail flowing through the Chief Post Office and the main offices in larger suburban and country centres. Other staff will help in the delivery of telegrams, manning telephone switchboards and teleprinters. The Post Office will draw on university and secondary school students to handle the work. Most of them will be employed for the fortnight before Christmas and a few will remain afterwards while permanent staff are on holiday. Last year the post offices in Christchurch handled more than two million pieces of mail. The heaviest posting days were between December 11 and 14. Most suburban areas of Christchurch will have two postmen delivering mail during the peak periods before Christmas.
Mr J. R. Smith was reelected chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board at the board’s meeting yesterday. Mr E. J. Bradshaw was re-elected deputy chairman on the casting vote of the chairman after the two nominees, Mr Bradshaw and Mr H. E. Denton, had each gained three votes.
