COURSE FOR LEADERS

louth Council

Programme

An introductory youth leadership training course, arranged by the Canterbury Youth Council, began in Christchurch on Saturday morning.

The first course of its kind to be held by the council, it was arranged at the request of member organisations to help the many persons in the city who run clubs but who have never been trained in leadership, said the organiser (Mr R. Consedine). The course has four sessions. Subjects for the 30 persons taking the course include teaching methods, communication techniques, games and activities, meeting procedures, effective speaking, leadership and programme planning. Mr Consedine said a danger jin youth organisations was that small groups of highly trained leaders were concerned primarily with administration, and would not delegate work. There were also too many youth organisations and clubs concerned merely with filling :in time for their members; these were not giving much training for the future. Among those taking the present course were representatives from the Girl Guides, Teachers’ College, Catholic Youth Movement, Methodist Youth Movement, and Presbyterian youth groups.

It was hoped to hold a further preliminary course and a more advanced one next year, said Mr Consedine.
