“Sex And Morality”
Sir, —Last month the S.C.M. Press published the report of a working party appointed by the British Council of Churches. This report was entitled “Sex and Morality” and I was invited by “The Press” to comment on it. It appears that the churches have now rejected this report, and so my heading “The Church Hesitant,” becomes inapplicable. If you have already announced the churches’ decision I have not noticed the item and there may be others innocently in peril. As a correspondent of the “New Statesman” points out (November 4), theological complications will arise in certain cases of sexual intercourse occurring between the issue of the report and the announcement of its rejection. I therefore urge you, sir, to rush this letter into your columns. —Yours, etc., R. A. COPLAND. November 20, 1966.
[We do not appear to have reported the decision of the British Council of Churches, probably for the reason that it was not quite as conclusive as Dr. Copland has inferred. The council affirmed that sexual intercourse should
be confined within the married state, but referred to its Advisory Group on Sex, Marriage, and the Family the seven recommendations of the working party for further examination and report. —Ed., “The Press.”]
