Scientific Sixes
The Australian cricket team left Salisbury recently relieved at the knowledge they are unlikely to meet again on their tour the 6ft 4in Rhodesian batsman-wicket-keeper, H. Gardiner.
In his innings of 86 at Bulawayo and 81 at Salisbury, Gardiner hit 11 sixes off the Australian bowlers. Some of them were huge clouts with carries of 120 yd or more.
Gardiner achieved his sixes with clean-blade crossbatted slashes and the Australians voted him one of the most scientific sixhitters in cricket. Even Australia’s acknowledged sixhitter, J. W. Martin, who put two over the boundary line at Salisbury, was dwarfed.
