Busiest Swimming Season
QHRISTCHURCH swimming is about to start the busiest season in its 86-year histoi, - . The New Zealand and South Island title meetings and the national water polo championships will all be held in the Centennial Pool and it is the avowed intention of the Canterbury Swimming Centre to create the opportunity for as many competitors as possible to swim in inter-club carnivals.
Diving, too, is to be encouraged; there is a possibility that contests will be held fortnightly at the Jellie Park pool. Two types of Saturday carnivals will be held: age group and primary-open. This season’s age group swimming will be in oneyear groupings, instead of the previous two-year sections. The inter-club meetings start with an under-age carnival at Papanui on Saturday. The regional and national finals of the teleprinter con-
test will occupy two Saturdays in December. Swimmers from the Broken Hill (N.S.W.) club will compete here early in January and the provincial championships will be held over six days, starting on January 21. Diamond Harbour will be the venue of the open water races. The South Island championships will be held at the Centennial Pool on January 28 and the national title meeting follows on February 15, 16, 17 and 18. This is the
first time since the senior and junior championships were combined in 1960 that the meeting has been condensed into four days. A televised carnival will be held at Sockburn Park pool and between February 28 and March 4 the water polo championships will be decided. Eleven inter-club carnivals will be interspersed among the prestige meetings and two of the outlying clubs, Rangiora and Kaiapoi, will be among the hosts.
