Farmers Oppose Dr McMeekan
Statements by Dr. C. P. McMeekan, agricultural adviser to the World Bank, about the toughness of New Zealand lamb were criticised by several members of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers meat and wool executive yesterday.
“Dr. McMeekan’s statement was not in the interests of the country, or anyone; 1 think it was in bad taste,” said the president (Mr W. N. Dunlop). Mr Dunlop said he was referring, in particular, to that part of Dr. McMeekan’s statement dealing with New Zea land lamb.
“We have been exporting lamb for many years, and suddenly we get these complaints,” said Mr D. G. McGrath, of Oxford. Mr Dunlop: Of course, when things are cheap, the consumer is more selective.
“Dr. McMeekan probably talked for a considerable time, but I would say he has done more harm in five minutes than the good he has done in years,” said Mr A. F. Wright, of Annat. Dr. McMeekan’s
statement, he added, had caused concern “all over the country.” Mr Dunlop: Steps have been taken to meet the toughness. Mr McGrath: You know of your own experience with home-killed mutton, that you strike a tough sheep for no apparent reason. Perhaps Dr. McMeekan could pin-point this problem. Mr E. W. Turrell, of Motukarara/said he thought Federated Farmers should support that part of Dr. McMeekan's statement which was true—“that the Increase in sheep numbers was because of the need to provide Mum with the income to which she had become accustomed, and to which she was entitled.”
“Wie should not worry about that part of the statement with which we don't agree,” said Mr Turrell.
