RUSSIA’ 8TH VICTORY
World Chess (N.Z.P.A -Reuter —Copj/ripht) HAVANA (Cuba). The Soviet Union won the world chess championship for the eighth successive time at Havana on Thursday. With only one round left, the Russians have 36 points and a five-point lead over the United States, who are almost certain to finish second. The United States are one point ahead of Hungary hut they have easy opposition, Cuba, in the final round while the Hungarians have a tough match against Rumania. Jugoslavia is fourth with 28 points and Bulgaria next with 27}. A surprise upset in Thursday’s matches was the defeat of the American champion, R. Fischer, by F. Gheorgiu, of Rumania.
