Cabinet Reshuffle In Saigon
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SAIGON, November 18. A reshuffle of the South Vietnam Cabinet was announced officially today.
The creation of a new Ministry of Culture; the splitting of the Finance Ministry into two separate Ministries; and new Ministers of youth, education and social welfare, were described in an official statement.
The Cabinet reshuffle was aimed at ending an eight-week-long dispute based mostly on North-South regional lines.
The announcement was postponed from yesterday, officials said, because of continued disagreement. Further Cabinet changes were thought likely in the next few weeks. The Cabinet’s role In Vietnam is largely advisory. Real power rests with the military junta. Dr. Nguyen Luu Vien, the Deputy Prime Minister, was named to head a new Ministry of Culture. He is a southerner and was one of seven dissidents who brought the Cabinet crisis to a head in midOctober by handing in their resignations.
