TAX EVASION Inquiries Into 600 Companies
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, November 18. Tax evasion inquiries now covered more than 600 companies, many of them internationally based, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue (Mr L. J. Rathgen) said today.
He said he was not permitted to state, however, how many of these inquiries dealt with oil companies. On Wednesday Mr W. W. Freer, Labour candidate for Mount Albert, said a group of oil companies had avoided
£4m in taxation by over-charg-ing.
He asked why the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) had deferred action against the companies until after the election.
Mr Rathgen said the special inquiries covered many types of companies, among them oil companies. Assessments of income tax, some of it dating back to previous years, were continually being sent to companies. In many cases these were paid without question.
It was not correct that Mr Holyoake had interfered with the inquiries. In fact, the Inland Revenue Department would take action against a company whenever it desired to do so.
