BURNSIDE ADDITIONS
Library And Gymnasium
Considerable building additions have been approved for the Burnside High School and more are sought by the board of governors. The Education Department advised that the school would receive a new freestanding library in the 196667 building programme. This will be on the north-west corner of existing buildings with - an outlook on to Memorial avenue. The staff room will be extended during the summer vacation. The Parent-Teacher Association reported that it was almost ready to call tenders for a new gymnasium to be built close to the swimming pool and tennis courts so that changing rooms would serve all three. The headmaster (Mr C. Cross) urged that assembly hall extensions also be sought. There was already a plan available to extend this type of standard hall, he said, ft provided for a gallery at the front over the foyer and for straight extensions at the other end. With a gallery added, the school would just be able to assemble all of its 1000 pupils at one time. If it grew as suggested to 1200, the other extension would also be needed The board agreed to propose to the Education Department at least part of this work. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) reported that the school would receive an extra £BBO under the increased general-purposes grant, but that debts of £865 would absorb most of the increase this year. Board members said this position showed the need for the higher grant. The board will investigate a proposal that a low hedge be planted along the Memorial avenue frontage of the school.
