Beaten Chelsea Keeps Soccer Leadership

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright} LONDON. The day’s biggest crowd, 55,958, saw Manchester United beat top-of-the-table Chelsea, 3-1, in the English League soccer programme on Saturday. The Londoners took a point from United when they visited Manchester three weeks ago, but apart from a spell of supremacy in the first half, they seldom looked likely to hold the strong-tackling, lively United side on Saturday. In spite of the defeat, Chelsea retains the first division leadership, but the championship race is now close, with only two points separating the top four clubs. _ , Chelsea has 21 points, Stoke City and Everton 20 each, and Manchester United 19, but United has a game in hand over the leading trio. In Scotland, Celtic dropped its first point after a run of 23 victories. A fighting St. Mirren team, for whom the goalkeeper, D. Connachan, made a sparkling debut, held Celtic to a 1-1 draw in Glasgow. As well as conceding a point, Celtic lost its right-half, R. Murdoch, .who was ordered off seven minutes from the end. Rangers, with a 5-1 win over Motherwell, moved into second place with 13 points from eight games, compared with Celtic’s 17 from nine.
